SDGs and Universal Design
What is sustainability about? Sustainable development is about moving all of us in a direction where we can live our lives in balance with our planet. Sustainability also means meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. “We live in the Anthropocene era” which means that we as human beings are so influential on the planet, that the way we live determines whether the planet can continue as a balanced system.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focus on 4 dimensions of our lives. The first set of goals is how we live. It is our health. It is our education. It is access to housing, water, food etc. It is our way of living. The second set of goals focus on economic factors. This is how we earn money to live our lives. This is about our work and production and whether we produce sustainably. The third set of goals acknowledges that while we live and we work, we put pressure on the environment. The fourth set of goals focus on how we are organized. It is about inequality. It is whether we give voice to everybody in Society. There is a very important obligation in sustainable development and that is the commitment to Leave No One Behind. Leaving no one behind, is where sustainability meets human rights. It is a commitment to oppose discrimination. It is also a way of saying that in all the dimensions of life, we must endeavour to bring everybody on board.
