“ACCESSIBILITY BY DESIGN” for Interaction and Game Design Educations: Beyond Checklists and Guidelines

Interaction and game design is taught routinely at most universities around the world both at a graduate and undergraduate level. Yet only a few of these programs offer specializations and modules on principles of Universal Design.

Alessandro Canossa’s project aims at creating a higher education curriculum that identifies blockers and challenges and offers accessibility options as well as exploring the design of pleasurable interactions that cater to all levels of abilities without requiring accessibility options. In order to do so Alessandro proposes to map the current state of the art in accessibility and universal design for digital games by visiting commercial partners and academic institutions and create a curriculum for interaction design based on the findings.

Alessandro plans to conduct his investigation at Ubisoft and Concordia University and Northeastern University from September to October 2024. He also plans to visit RMIT from December to January 2024.

Visits in Boston and LA

I visited Northeastern University in Boston (my sponsor was Prof. Casper Harteveld) where I held a workshop with faculty to improve the curriculum for teaching UD for interaction design and held a week-long pilot class at the master program “Game Science and Design”.

Additionally, I visited the Activision User Research facility in Los Angeles (my sponsor was Ahmad Azadvar, Game User Research specialist) where I collected the strategies for UD that Activision employs for the game franchise Call of Duty.
